Carrie Underwood’s Trainer Talks about Carrie’s Exercise and Diet


There are rumors that 2014 may be the year Carrie Underwood has a baby. A source told Life & Style magazine, “Mike and Carrie hoped to get pregnant in 2013, but they decided to put it off. During the holidays they told friends and family that 2014 was going to be the year they had a baby. They are both finally ready now.” Meanwhile, with no baby bump yet, Carrie Underwood’s trainer Erin Oprea spilled the details of Carrie’s diet and exercise habits with E!Online:

What do her workouts consist of? How have they changed since you first started with Carrie?

 When I first meet a client there is always a learning curve. Each person’s body reacts to exercise differently, so I will tailor individual workouts to meet a client’s fitness needs. We first concentrate on body weight exercises like squats, lunges, pull-ups, push-ups and dips. I do a mix of cardio as well as resistance training in most sessions. For cardio, we do sprints, boxing, jump rope and plyometrics. For resistance training, I recommend mixing body weight exercises together with weights. For reps, we change them all of the time…there is no set number. Carrie’s workouts change every time we work out! She never does the same workout twice. I always incorporate some of the basic exercises in every workout.

What are Carrie’s favorite and least favorite exercises?
One of Carrie’s favorites moves is the cherry picker, where you lunge into a squat. She loves all different leg exercises! Most females dislike pull-ups, but it is a very important exercise in toning your upper body.

What can you tell us about Carrie’s diet and nutrition plan?
Nutrition is key to maximizing everything you do during your workouts. My belief in nutrition is to eat clean and unprocessed foods, and really watch your sodium and sugar intake. Carrie told Woman’s Health that she loves a tofu scramble with peppers and onions for breakfast, and I know that she snacks on raw vegetables.

Country singer Miranda Lambert was spotted backstage at the Cumulus/Westwood One Radio Remotes during the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. She’s lost 25 pounds and is looking really great. This past winter, she talked to People magazine about her weight struggles:

“I spent my 20s on  a roller coaster — my yo-yo weight, working all the time and partying. I just wanted to get healthier and go into my 30s in the best shape I could be in.”

Portion control and making better choices helped her lose the weight:

“Smaller portions right from the start. Instead of steak for dinner, I might have chicken and a baked sweet potato.”

And her exercise routine keeps it simple:

“We do cardio and a lot of circuit training. We do things that use my body weight, like lunges.”

Kate Winslet told E!News that she hadn’t done anything special to get back into shape after the birth of latest baby, Bear in Decemeber.

“Honestly, I haven’t been doing anything yet,” the mother of three explained. “Mother nature has been a little kinder to me this time, than my previous pregnancies. Nursing, busy, baby, life.”

Before and After: How Maria Menounos Went from Size 14 to Size 4

Maria Menounos wasn’t always a size 4. When she went to college, she gained not just the dreaded Freshman 15, but the Freshman 40! In 2008, she shared her story with Fitness Magazine and spoke to the Today Show about it. Her weight struggles back when she went away to Emerson College in Boston. Challenging boys to eating contests and a high-carb “dorm diet” of pizza and French fries made her gain 40 pounds.

“All it really took was a dedication to making better choices. I didn’t consider myself to be on a diet. I never thought about a diet. I never weighed myself. I just started to cut back on everything that I was eating that was bad.”

Menounos lost the first 20 pounds in about five months with the help of chili peppers, hot sauce, vinegar, grapefruit and lots of water.

“I worked on everything I ate for a week – every single thing. I realized, ‘OK, my problem is carbs.’ So I started to cut back on my carbs and started replacing [them] with better food. I ate a grapefruit in the morning. I had heard that grapefruit burns fat, so it was the first thing I would eat. I ate a lot of spicy peppers and jalapenos and a lot of vinegar, which I already loved anyhow, because I also heard that burns fat.”

When she need help losing the last 20 pounds, Maria paid $55 for one session with a personal trainer, who wrote down a workout routine that included both strength and cardiovascular exercises, a workout sheet she still has to this day. Now, she focuses on balance:

“I think it’s a balance. I definitely don’t deprive myself. I eat whatever I want, but in smaller portions. Then if I have a bad weekend, like I did this weekend, I’m going to make sure that the rest of this week I have fresh salads with fresh chicken on it — very healthy choices.

“So I get to eat what I want, but when I have what I want and it’s not good, I make sure I make some better choices for the next couple days.”
