Growing up, Christy Turlington was one of my favorite supermodels. Now Christy Turlington Burns, she was just named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People for being an ambassador for maternal health. After the birth of her first child, she suffered postpartum hemorrhage a common complication of labor that’s manageable in countries like the US, but deadly in developing countries. She made the documentary No Woman, No Cry to raise awareness of maternal mortality and founded Every Mother Counts, which provides health education, medicine and emergency care in poor countries.
